Is a BJ’s Membership Worth It in 2026?

A BJ’s Club membership costs $60 a year. BJ’s Club+ costs $120. Both prices were read from BJ’s own membership sign-up page on 2 October 2026, and both renew automatically through what BJ’s calls Easy Renewal.

That leaves two questions with different arithmetic: is the $60 base membership worth paying at all, and is the $60 upgrade to Club+ worth it on top?

The two tiers, side by side

Club Club+
Annual price $60 $120
Rewards on eligible purchases — 2% back, up to $500/year
BJ’s Gas Member pricing Member pricing plus 5¢/gal off
Same-day delivery From $9.99 a delivery 2 free a year, then the same fees
Curbside pickup $3.99 on orders of $50 or less Always free
Household card included 1 1
Manufacturers’ coupons accepted Yes Yes

All of it is from BJ’s comparison chart and footnotes. It will look familiar from our Sam’s Club Plus breakdown: same $60 and $120 prices, same 2% headline, different small print.

Is the $60 base membership worth it?

The main benefit — lower shelf prices — is not something BJ’s publishes in a form you can check. Its membership page says members “save up to 25% off grocery store prices”. “Up to” is a ceiling, not an average, and we have no independent figure to put next to it.

So do the sum the other way round. Work out what saving rate you need:

$60 ÷ your annual BJ’s grocery spend = the saving you need to break even

Spend $1,200 a year at BJ’s ($100 a month) and you need to be saving 5% against where you would otherwise shop. Spend $600 a year and you need 10%. Spend $300 and you need 20%, which is close to BJ’s own best-case claim.

The only way to know your number is to price your own basket: your ten most-bought items, per ounce or per count, against your usual supermarket. Bulk packs that go stale in a cupboard are not savings.

Gas is the more checkable benefit. BJ’s says members save 20¢ a gallon on average at BJ’s Gas, based on price data from the Oil Price Information Service for the markets where it has stations. Taken at face value:

$60 ÷ $0.20 = 300 gallons a year

That is about 6 gallons a week — a single weekly fill-up for most cars. With a BJ’s Gas station on your commute, the base membership can pay for itself on fuel alone. The 20¢ is BJ’s own average, not a number we could verify; your local gap could differ.

Is Club+ worth the extra $60?

Club+ costs another $60 a year, repaid through three routes.

Route 1: 2% rewards — needs $3,000 a year

$60 ÷ 0.02 = $3,000 of eligible spending a year

That is $250 a month. The catch is the word eligible. BJ’s membership terms list what does not earn rewards: eye exams and optical, hearing aids, tax, bottle deposits, alcohol, tobacco, lottery, gift cards, propane, BJ’s Gas, membership fees, delivery and pickup fees, third-party services such as BJ’s Travel and warranties — and purchases paid through PayPal or other third-party wallets.

So when you check your own spending, strip out fuel and wine first. A household that spends $300 a month at BJ’s, $80 of it on gas, has $220 of eligible spend: $2,640 a year, earning $52.80. That household is $7 short on rewards alone.

Rewards are BJ’s credit, redeemable from $10. If you hold a BJ’s One Mastercard, the terms say the card’s own rewards terms apply instead — a credit product outside this site’s scope, but it changes the sum.

Route 2: 5¢ off a gallon — needs 1,200 gallons

$60 ÷ $0.05 = 1,200 gallons a year

About 23 gallons a week — roughly two cars filling up weekly at BJ’s. For most people it is a contribution, not a break-even: 600 gallons a year is worth $30.

Route 3: two free deliveries — worth about $20

Club+ includes 2 same-day deliveries a year with no standard delivery fee, on orders of $50 or more. For Club members, BJ’s lists delivery as “starting at $9.99”, and its footnote says the fee can change with location, order size and timing. At the floor price:

2 × $9.99 = $19.98 a year

Small. Delivery is not the reason to upgrade here.

Add them up

(eligible spend × 0.02) + (gallons at BJ’s Gas × $0.05) + $19.98 if you would use delivery — compare with $60

A household that should upgrade: $200 a month of eligible spending ($48), 600 gallons a year ($30), two deliveries ($19.98). Total $97.98 against $60. Clear yes.

A household that should not: $100 a month of eligible spending ($24), fills up elsewhere ($0), never orders delivery ($0). Total $24. Club+ costs that household $36 a year for nothing.

Read the refund terms before you upgrade

BJ’s cancellation policy on the base fee is generous: a dissatisfied primary member can cancel “at any time” and get the current period’s fee back, in a club or by letter. Once only — second and later cancellations are not refunded.

But three details in the same terms matter for Club+:

  • Upgrade fees are not refunded. The membership terms say upgrade fees and add-on fees “will not be refunded”. Upgrade mid-year, change your mind, and that $60 is gone.
  • You can only downgrade at renewal. Club+ cannot be dropped back to Club partway through a year.
  • Cancelling forfeits unspent rewards. Spend your balance before you leave.

And if you let the membership lapse and keep shopping, BJ’s applies a 20% non-member surcharge to in-club purchases. Cancelling means stopping.

If delivery is the real reason

BJ’s sells a separate delivery add-on, Same-Day Select, at $100 a year for unlimited same-day deliveries on orders of $50 or more. BJ’s own comparison: 11 deliveries at the standard fee cost $109.89. So:

$100 ÷ $9.99 = 10.01, so the 11th delivery is the first one that puts you ahead — before counting the $60 membership it sits on top of

Membership plus Same-Day Select is $160 a year. For comparison, Amazon Prime costs about $140 a year — approximate, because Amazon’s pages return errors to automated requests and we could not confirm the figure at source. They solve different problems — a bulk warehouse order versus individual items — and our Prime breakdown has that arithmetic. Paying for both because each sounds reasonable alone is how subscription bills creep up.

BJ’s vs Sam’s Club

Read from samsclub.com on the same day: Sam’s Club is also $60 for Club and $120 for Plus. The upgrades differ in the details:

BJ’s Club+ Sam’s Club Plus
Upgrade cost $60 $60
Rewards rate 2% 2%
Annual rewards cap $500 $750
Free delivery on $50+ orders 2 a year No stated limit
Delivery fee for basic tier From $9.99 $12
Extra gas discount for upgraders 5¢/gal None listed on its join page

Sam’s Club Plus is the stronger upgrade for delivery users; BJ’s Club+ is the better fit for anyone who buys a lot of fuel at the club. Costco would belong in this table, but its site blocks automated requests and we will not publish a price we could not read.

Bigger than any of this: check BJ’s club locator first. A membership to a club you won’t drive to is worth nothing.

Verdict

Join BJ’s Club at $60 if there is a club and a BJ’s Gas station on routes you already drive, and you fill up there most weeks — fuel alone can cover the fee. Or if pricing your regular basket shows a saving above $60 ÷ your annual spend.

Upgrade to Club+ only if the formula above clears $60 on your own receipts: roughly $250 a month of eligible, non-fuel, non-alcohol spending, or a mix of solid spending and heavy BJ’s Gas use.

Don’t buy BJ’s at all if you live alone, shop in small quantities, or the nearest club is a special trip. Bulk discounts only exist if you use the bulk before it spoils.

And don’t upgrade on day one. The base fee is refundable once; the upgrade fee is not. Start on Club, check three months of receipts, then decide. If a membership has already renewed unnoticed, our guide to cancelling forgotten subscriptions covers getting ahead of the next renewal.

Prices verified on 2 October 2026 at bjs.com (membership page, join page and membership terms) and samsclub.com/join. BJ’s and Sam’s Club figures are exact and taken from the companies’ own pages. The “up to 25%” grocery and 20¢-a-gallon gas savings are BJ’s own claims, not independently checked. The Amazon Prime figure is an approximation we could not confirm at source.
