The AI subscription market has converged. In 2026, ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro, and Google AI Pro all cost effectively the same: $20, $20, and $19.99 per month. Any article telling you one is meaningfully cheaper than the others at the standard tier is out of date.
That convergence is useful, because it means price isn’t your decision. Three other things are.
The honest first question: do you need to pay at all?
Every one of these has a free tier, and the free tiers in 2026 are far better than they were when these subscriptions launched. Before comparing paid plans, be clear about what $20/month actually buys:
- Higher usage limits on the best models — the free tiers restrict how much you can use the flagship model before downgrading you
- Priority access during peak demand
- Extra features that vary by provider — deeper research modes, file handling, image generation, connections to other apps
What it does not buy is a fundamentally smarter assistant for occasional use. If you open one of these a few times a week to draft an email or explain something, the free tier is genuinely sufficient and $240/year is a bad purchase.
The rough rule: paying is worth it when you hit the free tier’s limits and it annoys you. Not before. Hit the wall first, then upgrade — the wall is the signal.
The cheap tier almost nobody knows about
Both OpenAI and Google now sell something between free and $20:
- ChatGPT Go — around $8/month
- Google AI Plus — $4.99/month, cut from $7.99 in June 2026, and it includes 400GB of storage
Google AI Plus at $4.99 is the most under-discussed option in this entire category. If you already pay Google for storage, compare it against your current Google One plan before buying anything else — you may be able to fold your AI subscription into a bill you’re already paying, which is close to the best deal available in AI right now.
These middle tiers didn’t exist when most “best AI subscription” comparisons were written. If you’re a light-but-regular user who keeps bumping into free limits, this is probably your answer rather than the $20 tier.
Where the $20 tiers actually differ
Since they cost the same, pick on fit:
ChatGPT Plus — the widest ecosystem. The largest set of integrations, the most third-party tooling built around it, and the most tutorials and community knowledge. If you want the option that most people you know are using — which genuinely matters for getting help and sharing workflows — this is it. It’s the safe default for general-purpose use.
Claude Pro — long documents and code. Strongest fit if your work involves reading and writing long text or working on real codebases. If you regularly paste in something long and want careful work on it, this is the one built for that shape of task.
Google AI Pro — the integration play. The differentiator is not the model, it’s that it lives where your email, docs, and files already are. If your working life runs on Google Workspace, the value of AI that can see your actual documents exceeds small model-quality differences. Storage is bundled, which changes the value equation if you’re already paying for Drive space.
A disclosure worth making: this site is written with AI assistance, including Claude. We’ve tried to keep the comparison above grounded in price and product structure rather than subjective quality claims, but you should weigh our take on model quality accordingly and try the free tiers yourself. All three are free to test.
The $100–250 tiers: skip unless you know why
Each provider sells a power tier:
| Plan | Price/month |
|---|---|
| ChatGPT Pro | $200 |
| Claude Max | $100 or $200 |
| Google AI Ultra | $249.99 |
These are real products with real buyers — mostly developers and heavy professional users who would otherwise hit limits many times a day, and for whom $200/month is cheap against billable time.
For everyone else, they are not a better version of the $20 plan in any way you’ll feel. If you’re asking whether you need the $200 tier, you don’t. People who need it hit the $20 tier’s limits repeatedly and know exactly why they’re upgrading. It’s a capacity purchase, not a quality purchase.
Don’t pay for more than one
The most expensive mistake in this category isn’t picking wrong — it’s picking twice. Three $20 subscriptions is $720 a year, and the overlap between them is enormous. Almost nobody needs two.
If you’re currently paying for more than one because you signed up to compare and never cancelled, that’s the single highest-value cancellation available to most people reading this. Our subscription audit guide covers finding them — AI subscriptions are often billed through app stores, which means they don’t appear on the card statement you’d think to check.
The verdict
- Most people: stay free, or pay $4.99–$8. Google AI Plus at $4.99 or ChatGPT Go at $8 covers regular-but-not-heavy use for a quarter of the flagship price.
- Google Workspace households: Google AI Pro ($19.99). Integration with the files you already have beats marginal model differences, and the bundled storage may replace a bill you’re already paying.
- General-purpose daily use: ChatGPT Plus ($20). Widest ecosystem, most community knowledge, safest default.
- Long documents and code: Claude Pro ($20). Best fit for that specific shape of work — see our disclosure above.
- Power users: you already know. Everyone else should skip the $200 tiers.
Whatever you pick, use the free tier for two weeks first. All three let you. The upgrade decision is much easier once you know exactly which limit is annoying you.
