As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. HBO Max can be subscribed to through Amazon’s Prime Video Channels, so we may earn a small fee if you take that route — subscribing direct from HBO Max, Disney+ or Hulu pays us nothing. The cheapest option below is not the one that pays us. See our methodology.
There are five ways to get HBO’s shows onto your television, and they differ by more than $100 a year for the exact same episodes. The cheapest one is not the plan HBO Max puts in the middle of its pricing page, and for a large group of readers it isn’t a HBO Max subscription at all.
Here is what each route costs, verified on the companies’ own pages today.
The list price, exactly
Read from hbomax.com on 30 September 2026 and again on 14 October 2026, unchanged since our first check:
| Plan | Monthly | Yearly | Yearly ÷ monthly |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic With Ads | $10.99 | $109.99 | 10.0 months |
| Standard (no ads) | $18.49 | $184.99 | 10.0 months |
| Premium (4K) | $22.99 | $229.99 | 10.0 months |
That last column is the single most useful number on this page, and HBO Max doesn’t print it. Every annual plan is priced at exactly ten months of the monthly rate — $109.99 ÷ $10.99 is 10.008, and the other two tiers come out at 10.005 and 10.004. HBO Max’s help centre advertises it as “16% savings”, which is the same fact stated in the direction that sounds larger.
So the annual plan is not a discount. It is a bet that you will keep the subscription for more than ten months out of twelve.
The break-even you can do on your own bank statement
Pull up last year. Count the months in which someone in your house actually opened HBO Max.
- 11 or 12 months? Annual. Basic With Ads at $109.99 beats twelve monthly payments of $10.99 — $131.88 — by $21.89.
- Exactly 10 months? It’s a wash. Pay monthly and keep the flexibility.
- Fewer than 10? Monthly wins, and the gap gets embarrassing fast. Four months of viewing costs $43.96 on the monthly plan against $109.99 on the annual one. That’s 60% less for the same four months of watching.
Most households are in the third group and don’t know it, because the subscription runs whether anyone watches or not. HBO Max has a small, good catalogue — the argument we make at length in Is HBO Max Worth It? — and a catalogue you can finish is a catalogue you will finish, usually in two or three months.
The route almost nobody prices correctly: the bundle
HBO Max, Disney+ and Hulu sell a joint plan. From hbomax.com and confirmed in Hulu’s own price list, both read 30 September 2026 — Hulu’s price list dates its current bundle prices to new subscribers from 23 September:
| Bundle | Price | List price of the three separately |
|---|---|---|
| Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max — With Ads | $21.99/mo | $35.97/mo |
| Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max — No Ads | $34.99/mo | $61.47/mo |
The $35.97 checks out exactly: Hulu With Ads is $12.49, Disney+ With Ads is $12.49, HBO Max Basic With Ads is $10.99 — and HBO Max’s page prints the same “Save $13.98/mo”. The saving is $13.98 a month, or $167.76 a year — but only for someone who would genuinely have bought all three.
Here is the version that matters more. Hulu also sells a Disney+ and Hulu bundle, with ads, at $12.99 a month. Compare that with the three-service bundle:
$21.99 − $12.99 = $9.00 a month to add HBO Max. That is $108.00 a year — $1.99 cheaper than HBO Max’s own annual plan at $109.99, and $23.88 cheaper than paying HBO Max monthly.
If you already hold the Disney+/Hulu duo, the cheapest standing subscription to HBO we can find is still an upgrade on your Disney bill — but only just. Before the September price rise it beat HBO Max’s annual plan by $25.99 a year; now it’s $1.99. What’s left of the advantage is structural: the upgrade is billed monthly, so you get annual-plan pricing without prepaying a year or betting on ten months.
Run it the other way if you only want HBO: the bundle costs $11.00 a month more than HBO Max Basic With Ads alone, which buys Disney+ and Hulu for $132 a year against their $299.76 combined list. Worth it if you’d watch them. Pure waste if you wouldn’t — and “I’d probably watch it sometime” is how a $21.99 line item outlives the show that justified it.
The Amazon route
HBO Max is carried on Prime Video Channels, which bills it to your Amazon account and puts the cancel button in the same place as everything else you buy there. That convenience is real, and for people who lose track of standalone billing it is worth something.
We are not quoting Amazon’s price here. Amazon requires price data to come from its API with a timestamp, and this site doesn’t have that access — so any figure we typed off the page today would be unverifiable and would go stale without warning. Check it at signup and compare it against the $10.99 and $18.49 above, which we did read at source.
Two structural differences to know regardless of the number, covered in full in Prime Video Channels vs Subscribing Direct: a Channels subscription has no annual option, so the ten-month trick above is unavailable, and it is billed monthly only. If you are a genuine year-round viewer, direct annual billing is the cheaper structure even where the monthly rates match.
What the cheapest plan actually costs you
Basic With Ads is the cheapest route, and the compromises are specific rather than vague. From HBO Max’s own plan comparison:
- No downloads. Standard includes 30, Premium 100. Basic With Ads includes none — so no offline watching on a flight or a commute.
- 2 devices at once, 1080p. Same device count as Standard, so that isn’t what you’re paying the extra $7.50 a month for.
- No live sports. HBO Max’s plan page lists live sports on Standard and Premium only, as of 14 October 2026. It has moved twice: Standard and Premium only on 18 September, all three tiers on 30 September, and back again now. If sport is the reason you’re subscribing, check the plan card the day you sign up.
Upgrading to Standard costs $75 a year on annual billing ($184.99 versus $109.99), and buys no ads on demand, downloads and live sports. If you watch sport on HBO Max, that settles it, though the games still carry ads, since HBO Max serves “ads on select live and linear content” on Standard and Premium. If you don’t, decide on the downloads, not the ads: the ad load is the thing people think they’re buying out of, and the offline library is the thing they actually miss.
HBO Max also sells an Extra Member Add-On for sharing a plan with someone outside your household: $7.99 a month, per HBO Max’s own help centre. Two catches from the same page — it’s only for subscribers billed directly by HBO Max, and it isn’t available on the Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max bundle.
The five routes, ranked by what you’ll actually pay
| Route | Cost over 12 months | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Add HBO Max to an existing Disney+/Hulu bundle | $108.00 | Anyone already on the $12.99 duo |
| HBO Max Basic With Ads, annual | $109.99 | 11–12 months of viewing a year |
| HBO Max Basic With Ads, monthly, 4 months only | $43.96 | One or two shows a year |
| Prime Video Channels | Not published — see above | Anyone consolidating billing on Amazon |
| Full three-service bundle from scratch | $263.88 | Households that would buy all three anyway |
The verdict
Already paying $12.99 for Disney+ and Hulu? Upgrade to the three-service bundle. $9.00 a month is still the cheapest continuous access to HBO available — $1.99 a year under HBO Max’s best annual price, with no year paid up front.
Watching year-round, nothing else on that list? Basic With Ads, annual, $109.99. Only if you honestly clear ten months.
Here for one show? Do not subscribe annually and do not bundle. Two months of Basic With Ads is $21.98 and covers a full season with room to spare. Set a cancellation reminder the day you subscribe, and treat it the way you’d treat any monthly line item you can’t name.
Don’t buy any of this if your honest answer to “how many months did I open it last year” is two: a standing subscription is the wrong product, and every plan on this page is designed to make you forget you’re holding one. And if it’s HBO Max’s live sports you want, Basic With Ads doesn’t carry them: Standard is the cheapest plan that does, at $184.99 a year, $75 more than Basic.
Verified 30 September 2026; first published with figures from 18 September 2026. HBO Max plan prices, plan features and the Extra Member price come from hbomax.com and help.hbomax.com; Disney+ and Hulu prices from disneyplus.com and Hulu’s own help-centre price list; bundle prices from both. All are exact and exclude tax. Disney+ and Hulu prices rose in late September, which is why the bundle figures differ from our first version. HBO Max plan prices and features were re-read on 14 October 2026: prices unchanged, live sports back to Standard and Premium only. The Prime Video Channels price is deliberately not quoted — Amazon requires price data to come from its API, which we don’t have access to.
