Shudder costs $7.99 a month with ads, $9.99 a month ad-free, or $99.99 a year ad-free, read from Shudder’s own plan panel on 1 October 2026. Every plan starts with a 7-day free trial.
The question that decides it isn’t whether Shudder’s horror catalogue is good. It’s whether you should buy Shudder at all, when AMC Networks sells a bigger bundle that contains it. AMC+‘s own FAQ says the service comes “with full access to Shudder, Sundance Now, and IFC Films Unlimited”. So the comparison isn’t Shudder against nothing. It’s Shudder against AMC+.
The annual plan: ten months to break even
Start with the plan Shudder labels “scary good value”:
$9.99 × 12 = $119.88 paying monthly, ad-free.
The annual plan is $99.99.
That’s $19.89 saved — a 16.6% discount.
Shudder’s page says “save over 15%”, which is accurate. Now divide it the useful way: $99.99 ÷ $9.99 = 10.0 months. If you’d keep Shudder for fewer than ten of the next twelve months, the annual plan costs you money.
That is the standard “two months free” structure we break down in annual vs monthly billing, and it’s a particularly poor fit for a horror service. Horror viewing is seasonal for a lot of people. Price the most common pattern honestly:
| How you watch | Shudder monthly | Shudder annual |
|---|---|---|
| October only | $9.99 | $99.99 |
| October and November | $19.98 | $99.99 |
| Two three-month stretches | $59.94 | $99.99 |
| Ten months or more | $99.90+ | $99.99 |
For an October-only viewer, the annual plan costs ten times what one month does. Count the months you actually opened Shudder last year — not the months you meant to — and read off the row.
The same price, with less in it
Here is the full lineup, all from the two companies’ own sites on 1 October 2026:
| Plan | Shudder | AMC+ (includes Shudder) | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly with ads | $7.99 | $7.99 | $0 |
| Monthly ad-free | $9.99 | $10.99 | $1.00 a month |
| Annual ad-free | $99.99 | $109.99 | $10.00 a year |
| Annual ad-free, first year (offer ends 12 Oct 2026) | — | $39.99 | $60.00 less than Shudder |
Two rows of that table settle most of the argument.
Nobody should buy Shudder’s ad-supported plan. It’s $7.99 a month. AMC+’s ad-supported plan is also $7.99 a month and includes Shudder, plus AMC’s own shows, Sundance Now and IFC Films Unlimited. Identical price, strictly more content. We made the same point in our AMC+ review in August, and the prices haven’t moved since.
Shudder’s annual plan is $10 short of a bigger one. AMC+’s standard annual plan is $109.99. That $10 — 83 cents a month — is the entire price of everything AMC+ adds on top of the horror library.
The one row that favours Shudder is ad-free monthly, where it’s $1 cheaper. Over a year of monthly payments that’s $12; over a single October it’s $1. If horror is all you watch and you pay month to month, Shudder alone is the cheaper ticket, narrowly.
The AMC+ offer that runs out on 12 October
AMC+’s homepage is currently advertising its annual ad-free plan at $39.99 for the first year, against the usual $109.99. That’s 63.6% off (AMC+ rounds it to “60% off”) and works out at $3.33 a month. The terms on the same page matter more than the headline:
- Valid only until 12 October 2026, for new or upgraded Annual Premium subscriptions on amcplus.com in the US
- Can’t be combined with the free trial
- Renews automatically at the standard price on the second billing cycle — $109.99
- No refund or extension if the subscription ends before the year is up
Put that against Shudder:
AMC+ first year on the offer: $39.99.
Shudder’s annual plan: $99.99. Shudder monthly for four months: $39.96.
So the offer beats Shudder’s annual plan by $60.00, and matches four months of Shudder monthly almost to the cent.
The break-even is the useful number: if you’d pay for Shudder for five months or more in the next year, the AMC+ offer is cheaper — and you get the rest of AMC+ thrown in. If you watch only in October, one month of Shudder at $9.99 is still $30 cheaper than the offer.
The catch is year two. Leave it running and the second year costs $109.99, making the two-year total $149.98 — still $50 less than two years of Shudder’s annual plan at $199.98, but only if you’d genuinely have kept Shudder all that time. Put the renewal date in your calendar the day you sign up. Auto-renewing promotional annuals are exactly how people end up on the list of subscriptions they forgot about.
If you’re reading this after 12 October 2026, skip this section. The standard prices in the table above are the ones that apply.
Before you switch to AMC+ for Shudder
Two cautions, both from what the pages do and don’t say.
Check your device. Shudder’s homepage names Android TV, Google TV and Xbox among its supported devices. AMC+’s homepage device list doesn’t name any of those three. That list may simply be incomplete, but if your TV runs one of them, confirm AMC+ supports it before you prepay a year.
Read the price at checkout. Both sites’ page code contains a second, hidden plan module with different figures — $8.99 a month ad-free, $6.99 a month billed at $83.88 a year, and $4.99 with ads. It isn’t displayed on either site, and every figure in this article is from the plan panel that is. Still, the screen that takes your card is the one that counts.
Subscribing through Amazon instead
Shudder is carried as a Prime Video Channel, which we confirmed on Amazon’s own site on 1 October 2026. So is AMC+. Channels puts the subscription on your Amazon bill and the cancel button next to everything else Amazon charges you for — a real convenience if you’re likely to forget, and the reason it features in our list of Prime Video Channels worth paying for.
We haven’t confirmed Shudder’s price through Channels and won’t quote one we haven’t read on Amazon’s own page. Two structural points hold either way. Channels needs an active Prime membership. And Channels bills monthly as far as we’ve been able to see — so neither Shudder’s $99.99 annual plan nor AMC+’s $39.99 offer is available that way. As we set out in Channels vs subscribing direct, that’s a fair trade for a one-month October subscription and a poor one for a year-round habit.
The verdict
Don’t buy Shudder with ads. At $7.99 it costs exactly what AMC+ with ads costs, and AMC+ includes Shudder. Not a close call.
Don’t buy Shudder’s annual plan if you watch seasonally. It takes ten months to break even. An October-only viewer pays $99.99 for something $9.99 would have covered — ninety dollars for eleven months of not watching horror.
Skip it entirely if you watch the occasional horror film rather than seeking them out. Shudder is a specialist service; it doesn’t have a general library to fall back on when you’re not in the mood, and paying $99.99 a year for a genre you visit twice is the pattern this site exists to break.
Shudder alone is worth it if you watch horror and nothing else from AMC Networks, and pay month to month. The ad-free plan is $1 cheaper than AMC+’s, and for an October-only subscription, one month at $9.99 is the cheapest correct answer on this page.
AMC+ is the better buy if you’d keep Shudder for most of the year. Before 12 October 2026, five months of use is enough: its $39.99 first year undercuts Shudder’s own annual plan by $60. After that, the bar is the same ten months as Shudder’s annual plan — AMC+’s standard year costs $10 more and includes it.
Verified 1 October 2026. Shudder’s $7.99, $9.99 and $99.99 prices and its 7-day trial were read from shudder.com’s displayed plan panel on that date. AMC+’s $7.99, $10.99 and $109.99 prices, and the $39.99 first-year offer with its terms and 12 October 2026 end date, were read from amcplus.com the same day. That AMC+ includes Shudder is from AMC+’s own FAQ. Shudder’s availability on Prime Video Channels was checked on amazon.com the same day; its price there is unconfirmed.
